This 6.4 mile walk takes us almost round the area where the 1644 Battle of Boldon Hill was fought between the Newcastle Royalists and the Sunderland Roundheads (with a lot of help from the Scots), and just like the recent match, Sunderland won. At 350 feet, Boldon Hill is the highest hill in South Tyneside and so for those who want to walk the last 30 feet or so can go almost to the top, after a steep but manageable slow walk up. The rest of the walk is mainly pit and quarry paths.
