Denis Fox, local historian and artist, will be presenting his talk on local heroes and heroines, 'Beyond the Call of Duty'.

Examples of local stories of heroism will include:

• the RNLI including the Seaham Lifeboat Disaster in November 1962,
• the "Aycliffe Angels" female munition workers,
• Sunderland female shipyard workers in WW2 and
• Kate Maxey the nurse from Spennymoor who saved many British soldiers lives in WW1 working close to the front line especially in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Kate was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal for her bravery. (July 1st marks the 110th anniversary of the beginning of this tragic historic event).
