Durham Riverside

Event type: Group meeting
Date: 11th April 2025
Time: 10:00 am
Group: Walking

Durham riverside walk, led by Paul & Julie Stevens. A relatively easy 5 mile walk along the banks of the River Wear in Durham, during which we'll get some spectacular views of the cathedral. The walk will start from the market place in Durham at 10:00. We will walk down Silver Street to join the riverside at Framwellgate Bridge. After following the path for about a mile we'll find ourselves less than 100 yards from where we started. We'll continue following the path as far as the university playing fields, where we will cross over the river and start making our way back to the city centre. We can have a short break at the bandstand near the Durham Cow. We have to leave the riverside for a short while whilst we walk up New Elvet and then Church Street. We'll rejoin the riverside near St Oswald's church, which dates back to the 12th Century. Just after we pass the Prebends' bridge we arrive at the old Corn mill. Looking across the river we will see the iconic view of Durham Cathedral with the old Fullings Mill in the foreground. When we arrive back at Framwellgate Bridge we will retrace our steps up Silver Street to the market place.
Poor Weather: Because of the meandering nature of the walk, if the weather is or becomes poor we have several opportunities to reduce the length of the walk.
Car Parking: There are several car parks close to the city centre. Car parking: £3:10 to £3:60 for 2 to 4 hours.
Alternatively you may wish to use one of the park and ride options located at Belmont or Sniperly. Parking is free after 9:30am if you have a bus pass. If not, the park and ride bus fare is £2:20 return.
Belmont: Located just off the A690, near its junction with the A1. On leaving the A1 turn left at the roundabout. Buses depart at 9:30 and 9:45 - if they're on time.
Sniperly: Located just off the A167, just before the A691 roundabout. If you use this park and ride I suggest you catch the bus that departs at 9:36.
