Marsden to South Shields and Return, lead by Paul & Julie Stevens.
This is a relatively easy, mostly flat 5 mile walk from Marsden Lea to South Shields and return, initially following the coastal path around the Lea and Frenchman's Cove, and then the promenade in South Shields. As it'll be the end of February, and it may very well be rather chilly, we won't go to our usual spot up on the hill for a break, as it's rather exposed to the elements. Instead, we can take a sustenance break in either North or South Marine Park, depending on the availability of seating.
Toilets are available on the promenade and in South Marine Park.
Directions to Marsden Lea.
From the centre of Washington take the A1231 towards Sunderland and turn left onto the A19. After going over the Testo's flyover take the second exit, signposted South Shields A194. Go around the roundabout towards South Shields and, at the next roundabout, go right and take the A1300 (John Reid Road). Stay on this road and, after a couple of miles, you'll pass the Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre on the right and then, just before you reach the seafront, the Marsden Inn on the left. Turn left when you reach the seafront and park in the layby car parking on the right hand side of the A183. What3words - claim.author.laser. This is where we will gather to start our walk.
If you prefer there is a car park at Marsden - turn right instead of left when you reach the seafront. It costs £1.20 per hour. Be prepared to pay by mobile phone because, as we know from past experience, the ticket machine often malfunctions.
