The Twitchers Walk

Event type: Group meeting
Date: 13th September 2024
Time: 10:00 am
Group: Walking

Led by Paul & Julie Stevens. This is a relatively easy 5.25 mile linear walk from Coxgreen to South Hylton. Starting at 10:00, we will follow the south bank of the River Wear from outside the Oddfellows Arms down to the now sadly derelict Golden Lion.

Soon after leaving Coxgreen we will encounter the only strenuous part of the walk - a climb of 52 steps.

This walk will give those of you who are bird watchers plenty of opportunity to see birds of the non-back garden variety.

Upon reaching the Golden Lion we can stop for a refreshment break, before doing the return leg of the walk. Sadly, as the seats on the only remaining picnic bench outside the pub have been vandalised, unless you sit on the table top itself you'll have to remain standing.

Unfortunately, as I'm sure you will have expected, there are no toilets on this walk.

And finally, for those of you who like cryptic crosswords - will you spot 'The Spot'?

Parking

You can park on the south side of the river, near the Oddfellows Arms.

Meeting Point: What3words - repair.poetic.puff

To get to Coxgreen cross Fatfield bridge, turn left at the roundabout and follow the road up towards Penshaw. After travelling through the tunnel take the first left, and left again, onto Coxgreen Road. Stay on this road until you see the signpost pointing to Coxgreen - there is a stables on the corner. Alternatively, you may wish to park on the north side of the river and walk across the footbridge:

To get to this parking area you should exit Northumberland Way onto Pattinson Road (the road that runs through the Teal Farm area). Take the third exit off the first roundabout you encounter onto Staithes Road, and stay on this road down to the riverside.
